Gorgeous green nursery inspiration

Green is having a moment. I think it’s been since the pandemic, people have been more receptive and eager to create a sanctuary at home, a place to feel calm and safe. It’s nature’s colour, and so the right shade of green can have a similar psychological effect to being outdoors, including all the benefits that being out in nature can bring.

There’s no room in the home that we want to create that sense of calm and safety more than a new baby’s room. The place where you imagine yourself cosying up, getting to know your new arrival and becoming a family. And whether you’re keeping the gender a surprise for the big day or you just love the vibe, a green nursery is the perfect option for a boys room or a girls room, or even a shared room.

So for any of you expectant parents who are looking for nursery décor inspiration, here are a few calming green rooms that I just love, including one of my own recent designs which shows how easily a green nursery could be adapted for a bigger boys or girls room.

Cosy dark green

First up is one of my favourite houses on Instagram. It’s the home of Kaitlyn Madden (@kaitmadden) and her cute little family, and is an American dream both inside and out. The dark green walls are an unexpected shade for a nursery but it really works, it’s like a little cocoon. It’s lifted by the antique furniture and aged brass finishes as well as the subtle stripe pattern under the cot.

Easy breezy green

An all over mid-light green is the perfect base to add layers of neutrals and textures, as well as other splashes of colour. Perfectly proven by Topology Interiors in this nursery design, even the radiator has been painted which lets the gorgeous draped curtains and accessories take centre stage. Shows how green can be used like a neutral, but with more personality for a little one’s room.

Green panelling

I’m personally a huge fan of panelling when its used in this horizontal shiplap style. This cute little nursery by BSW Design, based in Canada, breaks up the expanse of green wall with the natural stripes created by the panelling. It’s a feature wall without it being overpowering. Green and orange are nature’s colours so you can never go wrong by pairing them together in interiors, and the subtle mix of patterns on the soft furnishings and the natural basket weave work a treat. And can you ever go wrong with baby animal prints in a nursery? I think not!

Whimsical Green

One for the print lovers, this bold green wallpaper by Residents Understood is perfectly balanced by the soft white and cream textures and the black furniture. It’s a whimsical statement and you have to be a fan of green to enjoy a room like this, but with room size and natural light on your side, the all-over green print can work really well.

Earthy Green

This Sian Zeng dinosaur wallpaper isn’t just any wallpaper, it’s magnetic! Meaning your little dino fan can get interactive and use their entire wall as a magnetic canvas.

Magnets aside, this wallpaper is also available as regular paper and as you can see from this customer inspiration photo, it goes perfectly with an earthy mossy green, bringing all the Jurassic vibes. The panelling gives it a vintage touch and the cot in a more blue-green shade shows how versatile this colour can actually be.

Soft Sage Green

The shade of the moment, sage green is a winner if you’re creating a soft, calm and airy nursery. Sage green can be found with more blue undertones, such as the beautiful room by Alyssa Thomas below, or can have more yellow undertones which give it a more green appearance. Whichever shade you choose, mixed with whites, creams and natural materials, sage green is a winner for any baby’s first precious room.

Think ahead…

And finally, as with all nurseries and children’s rooms, my advice would be to think ahead. Maybe five years down the line, you want the room you create now to still work for your child. It will need adapting to suit their needs and tastes as they grow, so designing a space that has flexibility and scope is essential. The design below is one I completed recently for a Room Styling client who was creating a soft green, nature inspired room for her 3 year old son. I helped pull together the space into a room fit for a little boy, but the base of this room (the wall decals, green panelling and curtains, could all have worked beautifully as a nursery, prior to adding in the more grown up boyish touches.

If you’d like to work with me on designing a room for your new arrival, your big boy or girl, or even your grown ups spaces, take a look at my packages and please get in touch, I’d love to talk!
